RaRe Mayombe
The project is located on the edge of the Mayombe Rainforest and covers an area of approximately 15,000 hectares. Half of this land has been deforested in the last century and our project is recovering the natural capital that has been lost. It focuses on reversing deforestation and fostering community economies, through agroforestry systems.
Connecting Local Communities with Global Markets
Rainforest Recovery (RaRe) combines native species with cocoa, connecting local communities with global markets. The intervention strategy was based on two agroforestry models that are suitable for different types of land to be recovered:
The Cabruca will be adopted in transition areas where some medium-sized vegetation already exists.
The Intercrop regime will be implemented in open areas that have suffered from soil degradation.
The largest area of the project will be preserved, avoiding as much as possible to disturb the existing fauna and flora. Ecological corridors and buffers will protect ecosystems and boost biodiversity, minimizing eventually conflicts between agroforestry areas and those to be preserved.
The Value Chain
The Value Chain is divided into 5 major stages that range from cocoa plantation to chocolate production (introduce scheme). Mamaland's activity covers the first three stages, consolidating 13% of the value chain.
Direct support for subsistence agriculture is planned through diversification of income and food sources, soil improvement, enhanced water management, biodiversity and pest control, products certification, carbon sequestration, knowledge transfer and community building, long-term sustainability, and free use of Mamaland’s logistics corridors.
